One of the most beautiful places in the world is the Island of Kauai Hawaii. Because we love to capture Ocean scenes and waves we find ourselves targeting countries that are bordered by an Ocean or Sea. Kauai just happens to be our favourite.
A usual day starts 45 minutes before sunrise and a quick coffee and a good cleaning of lenses gets me ready to head down to the beach to see what the day will unfold. I always stay in the same place because of its convenient location to the Ocean. I have a short 1-minute walk from the condo to the water.
Once we get to see what the day will bring I start to figure out the light and determine what filers to use. I always use several for each capture. Most of the time it is a Graduated ND and an ND as well as a polarizer.
This is when the test begins as I need to shift to composition to tie it all together. I am often seen moving quickly along the beach to tie other subject matter into the frame.
The whole process lasts about 30 minutes from the first colour in the sky to the sun rising. Most of the time, once the sun hits the horizon capturing the sunrise, is over. That is when I will shift directions and use the new light to highlight other subject matter with the sun at a 90 degree angle to me.
The Island of Kauai allows your mornings to start as described above. The next 15 hours of daylight will allow you to capture large waves and beautiful forest and waterfalls and streams. If anyone would like information on the Islands please reach out to me at any time.
